Carsten Pieper Ha, Motorpsycho have downsized their approach for good on the new album (sound-wise as well as concerning the songwriting/song-structures). Yay, indeed!
They really came up with a bunch of almost sunny, quite acoustic songs. A welcome variation, as their last releases, although still enjoyable, of course, started to feel a little like more of the same... Favorite track: Sentinels.
Eleventh Earl of Blah

Eleventh Earl of Blah Loving the summery acoustic vibe of this - quite a change from the heavier and more doom-laden sound they normally produce.

geha15 The new single Pattern from this album is reasonably pop-formatted and increases the excitement for the new album Jay!
TheDude

TheDude Judging from the only track released so far, this sounds like "WTF? Pretty decent!". Always admired bands that evolves, and after 30+ years it's safe to say that these guys have not stagnated. Hopefully they find a drummer to fill the shoes of TJ..

Favorite track: Patterns.

wafiii If this is Motorpsycho's last album as Bent suggests, I am so glad they chose to go back to the acoustic psychedelic folk that they championed with Phanerothyme. These THREE GUYS are so talented! Favorite track: Hotel Daedalus.

Sentinels 04:21
2 - Sentinels (Sæther) 4:21 there's ghosts around alive with half-done business in this town you feel their sound their presence swathes the city like a gown there's ghosts around they're guardians of the soul the conscience and control infused with city stories they remain there's ghosts around you feel their sadness floating on the breeze in the air and in the ground they are forever here in the aether, in the spheres infused with city stories they remain effervescent dark quintessence living city stories they remain

Patterns 05:10
3 - Patterns (Sæther) 5:10 those empty pages promise unknown those endless hours no words of your own the well has run dry there's not a drop left nothing remains to slake that thirst patterns that once were new now all seem so dull not much to offer content to carry on on a couch ever softer stifling yet a yawn the well has run dry there's not a drop left nothing remains to slake that thirst patterns that once were new now all seem so dull you're passing the baton faded & withdrawn the well has run dry there's not a drop left nothing remains to slake that thirst patterns that once were new now all seem so dull days are all too noisy nights never long enough you only seem to want to vanish with a puff....

Dank State 03:18
4 - Dank State (Sæther) 3:18 what a welcome airing of the cupboards they finally got the vermin out ah, to see accountability restored truth might finally come out Dank State, you have been ejected - now please go away failed ambition we have seen your face and your plays - how sweet it is to see you on your way the spell is broken altogether the veil has lifted from our eyes we are at the end of an error fed up with conspiracies and lies Dank State, you have been rejected - now we know your ways failed ambition we have seen your face and your plays - how sweet it is to see you on your way
5.
W.C.A. 04:15
5 - W.C.A. (Sæther) 4:15 so what do we look to for hints of what we'll need to do, when this is over at long long last? there's no going backwards but so many factors all conspire to keep us dumb and in the dark what comes after - I couldn't even begin to tell what comes after - what will remain and what will have gone to hell? a palpable tension, without comprehension: from utter detachment to full-on panic attacks an endless mutation or progress and stagnation? there is no telling and there’s no going back what comes after - i couldn't even begin to tell what comes after - what will remain and what will have gone? giant steps - a quantum leap to greet a new day dawning scared and closed or prepped and primed to get the 20s roaring once again? what comes after - I couldn't even begin to tell what comes after - what will remain and what will have gone to hell?
6.
6 - Real Again (Norways shrugs and stays home) (Sæther) 3:02 another place another time it might've worked out and we'd all been fine but we engineered our own downfall we citizens of the global sprawl it didn't take much to stumble and fall not much at all now we're hanging out in different rooms all pretending to cherish meetings on Zoom supposed to strengthen all our ties but your faces all seem demoralized I can see the light growing dim in your eyes you're in your room and I'm in mine we're both dreaming of another time when someday soon we'll meet again and then maybe we all can hug our friends and be real again
7.
7 - Loch meaninglessness & the Mull of Dull (Sæther) 2:54 did you ever think she'd find you? was there ever a real chance? the blank stares and the silence and the hiding ... a tight knot, and a long shot lost, you never was a finder and you never went a'searchin' on your own but she got through - she found you i bet you thought you were the only one i bet you thought it was too late but in your heart, the special one in your heart, the only one waited there for you
8.
8 - Hotel Daedalus (Sæther) 7:46 it's hard to see the way out of the maze right now stumbling round like drunks in the fog, and wondering why no road seems to lead where the signs say and it's ever harder to find a way to put it all behind us, to be strong and to move on: to find our new song some days feel much darker than they did before when I'm not really certain I can do this anymore eaten by this life that we chose the cheap hotels and fancy studios the drugs don't seem to be of much use at all anymore the old hotel is empty, all the guests have gone there will be a long night ahead before the dawn quietly it sits there on the slope, nothing left but memories, ghosts and hope but the band is still there and it's playing on
9.
Scaredcrow 01:49
9 - Scaredcrow (Sæther) 1:49 instrumental
10.
The Rapture 05:28
10 - The Rapture (Sæther) 5:28 days are getting longer and summertime is just a breath away the snow is finally letting go at last - it's just there sulking in the shade I hear the first birds in the trees, they sing about their lust, their want and needs and how wintertime is dying and now finally will fade into oblivion, where seasons past will always go to die. they know their time is up, and shuffle off and wave bye-bye. there’s logic here that none can deny the moment's almost here: when the madness grips the spheres and every single molecule takes off into the sky the sunlight turns the heat up another 5 degrees or so you feel the heat pervade your bones and warm your soul and put a spring into your step wherever you may go the day wakes up, the air keeps getting clearer you skip between the puddles on your way you hum a tune and make your way - it's a beautiful beautiful day 'cause soon it’ll be over, soon we'll be free again and all the kings pretty horses couldn't pull us back there again! I'll stand and I'll be counted, I'll stand up and I'll shout out loud and live it like I never did and hold my head up proud days are getting longer, summer's almost here I thank my guardian angels we survived another year. when summer rolls around again I'm gonna lay my head back in the grass and count my blessings one by one, and hope it won't be my last

about

After a series of epic, sprawling and headphones-friendly albums, Motorpsycho is back with a short, reasonably pop-formatted and intimate album of mainly acoustically based songs. For once playing the game instead of trying to reinvent it, this 10-song album of tunes is clearly a reaction in some way to too much architecture and too many grand visions, and dials the music down to more comprehensive and digestible sizes than have been the band's métier lately.

Motorpsycho have always been about the balance between hard and soft, electric and acoustic, big and small, light and shade … and now the time was right for a lighter touch to balance the scales. Yang to the Yin of earlier, more epic works (N.O.X., The Crucible, and Chariot Of The Sun), this is also an album that is relatively easy on the ears, and that actually works really well with a cup of tea at noon.

Yay! was produced by Reine Fiske and Lars Fredrik Swahn (Dungen, Melody’s Echo Chamber, The Amazing et al), and their production work brings a sweet Swedish psych edge to the album, giving it a lysergic tinge and charging what could easily have been a bit too ‘’backporchy'' with an electric vibe that lifts it out of the often staid singer/songwriter genre, but still keeping the intimacy intact.

While as ever clearly drawing on inspiration from late 60s/early 70s heroes, Yay! is as indebted to earlier iterations of Motorpsycho as anything else, and will be recognizable to fans of vintage Motorpsychodelia as well as a breath of fresh air to newer Psychonauts that only ever heard the heavy progressive side of the band.

Reactions ranging from ‘WTF?’ to ‘Finally!’ are expected. Use your ears!

Keeping things unpredictable and weird since 1989, there is only one Motorpsycho.
